Hi there, I've created a new site called Go! Zhengzhou. It's a forums for foreigners, expats, teachers and the like to share advice and and post questions about fair ol' Zhengzhou. The members' discussion boards have everything you need to know about Zhengzhou, and are written by the people who live and work here. They're completely free too! Join here. Are you moving to Zhengzhou soon and want to know what it's like to live here? Post your questions and get answers here. Do you want to make new friends, meet other expats or find language-exchange partners? Check out the social scene here. Have you got any job opportunities, or are you looking for work? Check our free listings here. Do you want to promoteyour band, business or event for FREE? Put a message on our discussion boards here. Hey,
I'm back from Qingdao and had a great time. Although we left the good weather back in Zhengzhou, Qingdao's a good place to hang-out for the weekend, even if the relaxed atmosphere occasionally means that most places are deserted - 'the' jazz club to go to didn't play jazz at all, and wasn't much busier than Zhengzhou's bars in midweek. Oh, and the four Starbucks are miles from the city centre. The Tsingtao brewery was really cool, if a little heavy on the "look at all the important politicians who have visited". Still, there's plenty on the traditional methods brought over by the Germans (including original still-operational Siemens machinery from the 19th Century) and, of course, opportunities to taste the beer. The highlight has to be "The Drunken House" - a room with the floor at a 45 degree angle; it messes with your senses, see photos of us leaning at impossible angles. The lowpoint is in the "Environmental Responsibilty" exhibit, where global environmental catastrophes are listed. The London Smog is given (none apparently have occurred in China) but the photo showing a pavement with perhaps 4 feet visibility, is a shot from the set of the Sherlock Holmes film! You can see a camera man, holding the state-of-the-art steady-cam, the director in jeans and a t-shirt, and the actors in period dress! Got back early this morning, had MaccyD's for breakfast and headed straight up to class. Exhausted, but I'd recommend Qingdao to a friend. Photos are online here. X Hey, We're going to Qingdao for the weekend with Brian and Nick. We're leaving straight after class today (about 4pm) and taking the night train to Qingdao, the capital of Shandong province. We'll arrive just after 8am on Saturday morning and have the better part of two days there. Our return train - also an overnighter - leaves at 4pm Sunday and gets back to Zhengzhou at 6am on Monday morning... four hours before my first class of the week starts! Qingdao used to be a German treaty port and the Old Town is apparently full of beautiful Bavarian architecture. The Germans lost the port after the first World War; it was handed over to Japan which understandably caused problems. And a rebellion. Before they left, the Germans taught the locals to brew beer and founded the now-infamous Tsingtao brewery (Tsingtao is the former transliteration of Qingdao). Although I've drunk Tsingtao all over China, I think a visit to brewery's own bar is in order. I'll report back on the taste tests when I'm back! X Ok, so I didn't see Shakespeare's ghost in the ghost town, but I did see a performance of Much Ado About Nothing.

Hey,
I've finally got all of my photos from April online, in the right order and the right way up. They're on this page for your nostalgic enjoyment. By comparison, I've been rather speedy in getting my photos from Dengfeng, the Shaolin temple and Song Shan (all of which made for a great weekend break) online already. They're all here. Mega-planning going on, but I'll try ot blog over lunch. X Hey,
Apologies for the lack of blogs lately - since your departure I've been up to my neck in catch-up classes. I finished my last one on Thursday night (9pm on Thrusday night, might I add) and as soon as I've got some time to catch you guys up on the few bits of news from Zhengzhou, we're darting off to Dengfeng for the weekend. We'll be back on Sunday some time, and I'll try to get hold of you to report back on all the Shaolin temples and holy mountains I've seen and climbed. Hope you're all well, X Hey,
I've finally got the first batch of photos from last month online. Hurray! They're here, and I'll be adding those that I took with the SLR, plus some crackers of the Great Wall by an up-and-coming soon-to-be-famous photographer M.D Sister, as soon as possible. They're here. X |
