When were these photos taken ? Before the dust settled ... and the plumbing began to break down. These look like photos prepared for a holiday brochure for a hotel that never gets properly finished. Everything looks so clean and everywhere is so tidy ... and deserted. However ... for free residential accommodation in China ... it's all good and, having seen your's and Anna's apartment, can be made into a really comfortable and welcoming home. Well done you guys ... you really landed on your feet in Zhengzhou and, through hard word and good planning, really turned your year abroad into a huge success. Bravo xx

Haha! This is what it looked like when I arrived! There were a few teething problems, absolutely, and problems with the bathroom and the internet were infuriating and I never heard a good explanation as to why things were left unfinished, as they are all over China.

Just as an FYI to anybody considering coming here, there are some things I think you should know about the place. Most would agree that regardless of the 'apartment' label thrown about (here on this site and elsewhere), these are not real apartments. In terms of size and space and design, this is actually a dormitory. Sure, new is good-- but a dorm is still a dorm.

Fair comments I think, thanks for your input. I take your point on it being like a dormitory - not in the sense of the students's dorms, if you've ever seen those - but you do live next door to your colleagues. I'd still, however, maintain that they're decent-enough apartments - self contained, and sufficiently private if you're prepared to leave people standing at your door and pretend you're not in. It certainly is very trying that everyone on campus knows where you live, to the flat number, and has no qualms about visiting late at night.
