Hey,
While I was notching up another 7km on the treadmill yesterday, the last of my photos from Vietnam uploaded. You can see them here, but this one's my favourite - a shop window in Hanoi at the Creative Oriental Crafts Kingdom... X

Hello from Nha Trang,
We've had a great two days in this seaside town, mainly chilling out at the Louisiane Brewhouse and getting more than a little bit sunburnt. This morning we went snorkleing off the islands nearby which was ace, and relaxing before we get the Reunification Express - a desperately slow train but must-do attraction, to Saigon tonight. More postcards on the way, I'll almost certainly be back in Zhengzhou and wearing my new walking socks before they arrive though! Liv's been in the Torygraph again, in the Money section apparently re: Student Loans; I'm quoted, still trying to find it, I'll post it here. I can't believe I've got to be back at work on Monday! We've had such an adventure traveling down the coast - some of the towns are stunning, and renting bikes (again) and a whistle-stop tour around the DMZ were fantastic. I'll try to get photos up asap when we're back - I shouldn't think I'll have to do any teaching: the semester starts in Monday at 8am and we haven't been told what level, course or hours we'll be teaching yet. Oh, it's five months ago! I found this about teaching in Tanzania, supposedly an English-speaking country. It sounds very familiar! I might write in... Map's updated with journeys already done - just a train, a plane, a bus and Hello,
We're back from Halong - actually that was yesterday but the internet's only just started to work - and after a day pottering about in Hanoi, and seeing Ho Chi Minh's mausoleum, we're taking the night bus south to Hué. Hello!
So, a night earlier than expected, after innumerable buses, boats and motorbikes, we've made it to Hanoi! I slept in this morning, so Anna's ripped off Robin Williams and blogged pretty extensively about our adventures en route here. When we got to the bus station in Dien Bien Phu (34km from the border, the first sign of human existence since the frontier from which the guidebooks preposterously suggest you try to flag down a lift) we were planning to go to Son La/ San Lo, but there was an exhausting 10 hour bus yesterday to Hanoi - truly gruelling, Anna and I may well have been the only passenger not to vomit. But anyway, there's lots to catch up on... Hey,
We've booked our flights from Zhengzhou to Kunming (Yunnan province, southern China) for Friday 7 January at 7.30pm. We'll finish teaching at lunch time and head straight to the airport, not a moment too soon! We've not yet booked anything from there on, but will sort out some accommodation in Kunming soon - possibly Couchsurfing or a cheap hostel, as we want to move on pretty quickly. We're leaving everything fairly flexible but in the five weeks we have off, we want to see: Kunming --> Dali --> Lijiang --> Tiger Leaping Gorge --> Shangri'la --> Back to Kunming to get visas --> slowly through southern Yunnan --> Northern Laos --> Northern Vietnam --> Hanoi --> Halong Bay --> Back into China --> Hainan for 5-ish days --> train back to Zhengzhou. Watch this space! X |
